I tried a new brand of Kombucha today - High Country. I went out on a limb and grabbed the Chai Spice flavor. It was....interesting.
First thoughts: I like chai tea and I like Kombucha so why not?First sip: Uhhh.
Second sip: I can taste the chai - nice flavor, good amount of spice.
Third sip: There's the kombucha. Tangy, slightly sour and somewhat vinegar-like.
The final verdict?? I liked it but I didn't love it. I appreciate the flavor that they are going for but the two different tastes clash pretty badly. I wouldn't recommend it to a newbie - but if you've tried most of the other fruity flavors, this is a nice alternative. Give it a whirl if you see it.
Plus it's local, made in Eagle, CO. Local foods/companies are always a plus for me.
I also had quite an experience yesterday with my regular brand of Kombucha. This was my first time trying the original flavor, which has no added fruit juices to "mask" the taste.
I really liked it until about the third gulp - instead of the little floating stringy things that the flavored versions have, the original had something different. Something horrible. A loogie!!! Or a tiny jellyfish - whichever you prefer.
See it?! Do you SEE the loogie? Holy balls - I nearly wrecked my Jeep when this slimy ball of gag me crept into my mouth. I told my dad about it right afterward, he thought it was pretty funny. I couldn't finish it, though the taste was just fine, trying to avoid that little creature was too difficult.Let me provide a back story as to why this was so traumatic. I've always had issues with loogies, I can't bear the sound of someone hawking up a lung cookie and if I even accidentally get one in my mouth when I have a cold/cough? I puke. Yup. Bad association.
In Other News:
I celebrated Cinco de Mayo not with a (much desired) margarita but with a somewhat Mexican-inspired meal. Brown rice, pinto beans, half an avocado & salsa. With some roasted asparagus doused in a balsamic reduction.
Also - I am excited to announce - oatmeal is back in my life!! Not in the mornings yet, that still sounds gross, but I had a lovely bowl of AB & J oats for an afternoon snack the other day. Makes me happy. So - anyone else have any bad associations with things like my loogie story?? What sounds make you squirm?? Besides the hawking sound, I would like to slap anyone who whistles random tunes around me. Biggest pet peeve ever.
Snot rockets. There is NO EXCUSE for them in my mind.
ReplyDeleteI'm loving all these new brands of kombucha coming out, but I can't find any! Maybe it's an east coast problem :-(
Omg I can't even imagine a loogie-like thing in my drink. I'm personally not a fan of Kombucha... tastes too much like vinegar for me! One sound I can't stand is when someone chews with their mouth open and smacks their food like a cow chewing! It drives me INSANE! Random whistling is pretty darn annoying too!
ReplyDeleteAmanda
I still haven't tried a kom. Drink yet! Btw my biggest pet peeve is people talking while smacking on their food!
ReplyDeleteim so glad you posted this! i saw that brand on sale at WF today and wondered if it was any good! i think ill stick to GT's.
ReplyDeleteilove that you say holy balls. i say it so much! it's the best.
i cant think of bad associations right now. but i hate the word moist. and panties.
oh wait. chewing loud/crunching! i had to leave the room last night b/c my roomie was eating croutons. UAHHFSHKLFNEKL.
all kombuchas taste like vinegar to me...i cannot drink them! two sips and i'm like ICKKKK!! whistling is pretty annoying. i hate when people say ain't...or use double negatives. alllllll over south carolina. HELP!
ReplyDeleteahh i do love kombucha...I just dont look directly into the bottle!! something I have tried over and over again and cannot bring myself to like is TEMPEH blehhh thats not for me!!
ReplyDeletei hate when people talk with food IN Their mouth so when they talk you can see it!
I also cant stand when you go somwhere often (like the gym) and someone who sees you there alot goes "omg you are ALWAYS here" I say back "umm so are you, because you obviously see me here?!" haha
I could write a book on pet peeves (as I do have issues, after all) but a couple that come to mind are whistling. The guy I share an office with is ALWAYS whistling. I hate the sound of people slurping drinks or eating corn on the cob. Loogies are always gross.
ReplyDeleteI associate apple juice with when I had to have a colonoscopy and do the whole "drink disgusting cleansing drink and then nothing but apple juice" prep. Can't drink it now. And Vernors--always had it when i was little with the flu, so it just reminds me of flu.
I am not going to lie, kombucha grosses me out. I have never tried it but it doesn't appeal. At all.
ReplyDeleteSounds that make me squirm- certain words, certain types of accent and that squelching noise...can't think right now what makes it but like when you take a spoonful out of a jar and there is that weird sucking/squelch GROSS.
That loogie is sick. Anything slimy like that would make me gag. I can take my own loogies in my mouth, but don't want any imitations.
ReplyDeleteI love kambucha but have only tried ginger synergy; do you think the other flavors of high country would be okay? they're all so expensive. honest tea brand came out with some drinks too!
ReplyDeleteKatherine
Katherine - I do think the other High Country flavors would be worth checking out. Sometimes my local store has Kombucha on sale so that's when I stock up. It's still not cheap though.
ReplyDeletemy synergy fruity ones have jelly fish! im still too scurred to try the OG flavor though. have you tried those botanical no. 9 or whatever ones? gingerade, gingerberry, and multi green are the furthest ive strayed fom the berry kinds. chai? hmmm...intrigued. hows the price tag?
ReplyDeleteughhh I cringed when I read this post because I can totally commiserate w/ you about the loogie in your kombucha. About a month ago I was downing a ginger kombucha and one of those big loogies found itself in my mouth! I spit it out immediately on the ground, only to discredit kombucha in front of my friends when I had been raving about it only a couple of minutes before hand.
