Last Thursday my parents came over for the weekend and babysat Lyric while Dave and I attended the 2nd Annual Hoopla For Hope. It's a 1950's themed event put on by The Matthews House which is a local charity that supports at-risk youth who are lacking in familial support.
Dave dressed up as a greaser (think Danny Zucco) and I went as a '50's housewife (aka myself, just from a different era). We didn't get any photos of our entire costumes but we did have some fun with the photo booth at the event.
The event also had a silent auction with numerous donations provided by local businesses. Among the spa packages, staycations, beer tours, hockey tickets and baked goods were two different packages that Dave and I bid on.
Me: the wine barrel from Vinocopia Winery.
Dave: the two day golf weekend at a fancy course.
Well, go figure - I won mine! It was a little more than I'd normally pay for wine ($200) but it came with a fancy barrel filled with the equivalent of 8 bottle of Malbec as well as a marble slab and cheese slicer.
I was a little worried I wouldn't like the wine that I paid so much for but it's quite good. Nice and smooth.
We also stayed for the live auction. Long story short - Dave ended up going back and forth with another bidder for the African Safari....AND WON! I was a little peeved because he went $400 over the amount we agreed on but whatever, it's for a good cause. We have two years to use it but we are now the proud winners of a 6-day trip to the Zulu Nyala Heritage Safari Lodge complete with freshly chef-prepared meals and twice daily safari trips! Holy crap.
Of all the places we talked about going, Africa was never on the list but it sounds amazing. I'm sure we won't use it until Lyric is at least a year old but I'm excited!
Have you ever won anything in a silent or live auction?
This was my first time participating in any sort of auction but the live one was much more fun. I love the little paddles.
