What Are Las Vegas Rolls?

Las Vegas rolls are a type of sushi that originated in the United States and gained popularity in sushi restaurants across the country. They are similar to California rolls but feature some key differences that make them stand out from other sushi recipes. The main ingredient in Las Vegas rolls is typically raw salmon or imitation crab, which is then wrapped in a nori sheet and rolled up with a layer of vinegared rice. The entire roll is then coated in tempura batter and deep-fried, giving it a crispy, crunchy texture that sushi lovers can’t get enough of.

Tools You’ll Need

To make this las vegas roll sushi recipe, you’ll need some basic tools that can be found in most kitchens, as well as a few specialty items that are essential for making sushi. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Sushi mat (also called a bamboo mat or makisu): This is used to help shape and roll the sushi
  • Rice cooker: To cook the sushi rice to perfection

Las Vegas Roll Variations

While the las vegas roll sushi recipe we’re sharing here is a classic version, there are many different variations you can try if you’re feeling adventurous. Some popular options include:

  • Spicy Vegas rolls: Add a dollop of spicy mayo sauce to the top of the rice before rolling for an extra kick of flavor
  • Air Fryer Vegas rolls: Instead of deep-frying the rolls, cook them in an air fryer for a lighter, healthier alternative
  • Lobster Tempura Vegas rolls: Use lobster tempura instead of shrimp tempura for a more decadent and luxurious roll
  • Vegetarian Vegas rolls: Replace the raw fish with cooked or raw veggies like avocado, cucumber, and sweet potato

Las Vegas Roll Sushi Recipe Tips and Tricks

Here are some tips and tricks to help you achieve sushi perfection with this las vegas roll sushi recipe:

  • Use a sharp knife: A dull knife can squish the roll and make it difficult to get clean, even slices. Make sure to wet the blade with cold water before cutting to prevent sticking
  • Don’t overstuff the roll: Too much filling can make it difficult to roll and cause the roll to fall apart when sliced
  • Use high-quality ingredients: Fresh ingredients are key to making delicious sushi, so don’t skimp on the quality of your fish, vegetables, and nori sheets
  • Be patient: Making sushi takes practice, so don’t get discouraged if your first few rolls don’t turn out perfect. Keep trying and you’ll get the hang of it in no time!

Prep Time: 30 minutes
Cook Time: 5 minutes

Take your taste buds on a trip to Sin City with this delicious Las Vegas Roll Sushi Recipe! This easy-to-make sushi roll is filled with flavorsome ingredients like cream cheese, crab meat, and avocado, and is topped with a crispy tempura batter for that extra crunch. Perfect for a party or a cozy night in, this Las Vegas Roll is sure to impress your friends and family.

  • 4 cups sushi rice, cooked and seasoned
  • 4 nori (seaweed) sheets
  • 8 oz imitation crab meat or cooked crab meat, shredded
  • 4 oz cream cheese, sliced into thin strips
  • 1 ripe avocado, sliced
  • 1/2 cup tempura batter
  • 1/2 cup panko breadcrumbs
  • Vegetable oil for frying
  • Soy sauce, for dipping
  • Wasabi and pickled ginger, for serving

  1. Prepare the tempura batter according to the package instructions. Set it aside.
  2. Place a nori sheet on a bamboo sushi mat or a sheet of plastic wrap. Spread one cup of sushi rice evenly over the nori sheet, leaving a 1-inch border at the top.
  3. Arrange a layer of crab meat along the bottom third of the rice. Place a strip of cream cheese and a few slices of avocado on top of the crab meat.
  4. Carefully roll the sushi, applying even pressure as you go. Use the bamboo mat or plastic wrap to help shape and compress the roll. Seal the roll by moistening the exposed nori edge with a little water, then press gently to make sure it sticks.
  5. Repeat steps 2-4 to make three more rolls.
  6. Heat about 1-inch of vegetable oil in a deep frying pan over medium-high heat. The oil should reach a temperature of 350°F.
  7. While the oil is heating, dip each sushi roll in the tempura batter, coating it evenly. Roll the battered sushi in panko breadcrumbs, pressing gently so the crumbs stick to the roll.
  8. Carefully place the breaded rolls in the hot oil, frying them for about 2-3 minutes, or until golden brown. Use a slotted spoon to remove the rolls from the oil and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain any excess oil.
  9. Once the rolls have cooled slightly, use a sharp knife to slice each roll into 6-8 pieces.
  10. Serve your Las Vegas Roll Sushi with soy sauce, wasabi, and pickled ginger on the side. Enjoy your flavor journey to Sin City!

For a spicy twist, mix some Sriracha or hot sauce into the crab meat before assembling the rolls. Feel free to get creative with your fillings! Try adding cooked shrimp, smoked salmon, or thinly sliced vegetables like cucumber or carrots. When frying the rolls, be careful not to overcrowd the pan. Fry them in batches if necessary.
