  • 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 1/2 cups white sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon almond extract (optional)
  • Red and green sugar sprinkles for decoration

  1. Preheat your oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).
  2. In a small bowl, stir together flour, baking soda, and baking powder. Set aside.
  3. In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until smooth and fluffy. This should take about 5 minutes.
  4. Beat in the egg and then stir in the vanilla and almond extracts. Gradually blend in the dry ingredients.
  5. Roll rounded tablespoonfuls of dough into balls, and place onto ungreased cookie sheets. Flatten each ball with the bottom of a glass dipped in sugar, and sprinkle with colored sugar.
  6. Bake 8 to 10 minutes in the preheated oven, or until golden. Let cool on wire racks.
  7. Once completely cool, store in an airtight container.

If you want your cookies to have a bit more flavor, you can add some cinnamon or ginger to the dough. You can also use royal icing instead of colored sugar for a more detailed decoration.
